EAPN Portugal - European Anti-Poverty Network series of webinars on Energy Poverty

March 05, 2024 from 15:00 to 17:00

Participants: João Pedro Gouveia

EAPN Portugal - European Anti-Poverty Network aims to promote and disseminate information and knowledge that enables more effective intervention on the ground, facilitate access to information and contribute to the construction of a favorable public opinion towards the phenomena of poverty and of social exclusion, as well as raising awareness of these problems.

In this sense and from a perspective of training socio-institutional agents, the nucleus of the Autonomous Region of Madeira of EAPN will promote a cycle of thematic online webinars, which will focus on energy poverty, “a complex and multidimensional problem, which results from the combination of a set of factors, in particular low income, difficulty in accessing efficient and quality energy services and the low energy performance of homes, being, across the board, enhanced by low levels of energy literacy. Energy poverty is, therefore, a problem with impacts on the social well-being, quality of life, health and labor productivity of families, and is not exclusive to families in situations of economic need. In fact, the concept of energy poverty also includes families that, in order to avoid energy costs, adopt practices that restrict its use, damaging their comfort and well-being, and also families that do not have disposable income that allows them to access more efficient energy services or implement measures to increase the thermal comfort of their homes.” (Resolution of the Council of Ministers no. 11/2024, of January 8).
