Analysis of Vulnerability and Social Interest Renovation Potential of Residential Buildings in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area

This work comprises a study on the assessment of the vulnerability of the building stock in Lisbon, defining the potential for improvement and appropriate renovation solutions. It focuses on the characterization and vulnerability analysis of the residential building stock in the Lisbon metropolitan area built between 1950 and 1990 before the existence of any thermal regulation and when there was a significant growth of buildings and construction work in Portugal.
These buildings have a low energy performance, families usually live with socio-economic problems and energy poverty that result in areas with buildings of low heritage and market value, and requiring great intervention to improve energy efficiency, sustainability, and thermal comfort of its inhabitants.
The main objective of the work is to identify and characterize in detail a representative typology of residential buildings from the studied region, and has as specific objectives analyzing visual characteristics and representing them in a 3D model, finally bringing proposals for architectural and sustainable urban planning for the renovation of these buildings.
The methodology is developed by analyzing data from the 2021 Census for the Greater Lisbon area, analyzing the physical characteristics of buildings in these areas, and selecting the most vulnerable regions to energy poverty, among others. Subsequently, two municipalities were highlighted for study: Moita and Amadora. After the analyses carried out in the rehabilitation programs already planned for such municipalities, the one chosen for more detailed analysis was Amadora, specifically the civil parish of Falagueira Venda Nova.
Thus, the typology of building most found in Falagueira was analyzed, which are mostly buildings of 3 to 4 floors, with clay tile divided into four sides, windows in wood and glass. And passive solutions were devised for the opaque areas of these buildings, promoting the identification of solutions that can be replicated for other buildings of the same typology and with the same energy efficiency problems.
